boiled peanuts

Post by Wesley »

Have you tried them? I really like them.

My Wegman's just started carrying them, so I am happy.

Some people think they are gross.

Opinions? And since this is the Debate Section, back them up.

I will do just that in my response to myself.

They are most popular in the Southern United States. You take young peanuts in the shell and boil them in a salt brine. If so desired you can ad spices; Cajun spices are a popular alternative. Once boiled, the shells are quite soft, almost leathery, and they are easy to peel open. The peanut is cooked, but not roasted. It has a softer texture closer to a boiled potato or something like that. The salty water has soaked in and the flavor is a mix of salt, peanut, and potato. Part of the charm of eating them is the routine of pop, peel, and suck. You pop the end of the peanut, peel the shell in half, and suck the salty peanuts out and drop the shell in the grass. Or on a separate plate if you are inside. Like a messier version of pistachios. They are so popular in South Carolina that almost every gas station has a pot of boiled peanuts next to the hot dog rack. Now that I can get them locally, I am probably going to buy some once a month for movie night or something like that.

If nobody else has tried them or has an opinion, then this is hardly a debate and I'll move this to the food section.

I tried them once, when I was rooming with a southern girl in Germany. I didn't care for them, but I was pregnant with Froot Loop at the time, and my tastes were off. I should try them again.

This doesn't look very tasty to be honest. Peanuts are good enough, why boil them?

In elementary we had to do this domb assed thng....

Teacher has a bunch of peanuts in a basket and we had to pick one and draw it/ memorize it and etc and see if we could identify it later.

I know ... wtf

I took the one chambered peanut ... everyone else was stupid.

With my free time I got to try weed for the first time and mess up my life ... j/k but the rest is true

I have never tried them, and to be honest, I don't think I'd want to. That's not to say I wouldn't if you had them available. But I certainly wouldn't go out of my way to purchase some for a taste test. I am not a huge fan of salt, nor do I care for a soggy taste or texture.
