Doesn't help that, looking at my word, at this point it's a total crapshoot - I'm not finding any words that will uncover one of the two remaining letters, without being t he word itself.. (I may recommend guessing 5 letter words that don't match up with the uncovered letters to try to find out the missing letter.. unless that's against the original rules)

No, that's not against the rules. Any word guesses are allowed. Even things like "asdfg"
The word has to be a real word though.
