Usually it turns brown because the sugar it contains caramelizes when being toasted. But whole wheat toast doesn't contain more sugar so I'd say its original colour is already darker than the white toast bread. Maybe you just get the impression it toasts faster whereas it just acquires a darker colour.

That is the best answer yet, Bella! Actually, because of the darker color, wheat bread toasts faster because it absorbs more of the visible spectrum of electromagnetic radiation. It also absorbs more of the infra red spectrum. The same way black leather seats get really hot in the sun, but grey or tan seats do not get as hot.
