Jay-Z : Young Forever song

Post by Clarence »

Let me say I love Jay-Z ... but I think I like the original "Forever Young" song by Alphaville better.

When his version plays ... it kind of annoys me.

I get that feeling like when someone annoying talks over a song I like and I really just want to hear the song. I really am in my head going "Jay-Z shut up I'm trying to hear this song man!!!"

I get really excited when the familiar melody starts ... but then annoyed when Jay-Z starts rapping in my face I'm like

My favourite version's by Youth Group. Think it was released around 10 years ago

I have never EVER come across a cover that is better than the original.

In my opinion, there are loads :P

I think Jeff Buckley's Hallelujah, and his version of Lilac Wine are better than the originals. And I love Leonard Cohen. Also 'All Along the Watchtower' by Jimi Hendrix is better than Bob Dylan's original. Johnny Cash did a pretty amazing version of Hurts, and The Byrds did a good Mr Tambourine Man (though I have come to like the original more as I've grown up). Iron and Wine have done a beautiful cover of Such Great Heights by the Postal Service. I can't stand Dolly Parton's orginial of 'I will always love you', though I know lots of people like it, Whitney Houston has the classic version for a reason, and that's a cover. I could go on!

Hey sizz. Smooth Criminal. Michael Jackson or Alien Ant Farm?

Haha they're both so great for completely different reasons! The Alien Ant Farm version has muuuuch nostalgia attached.

As much as I love the original, I actually prefer Alien Ant Farm. I feel like that's sacrilege though. I also like the original I Will Always Love You, but by far prefer Whitney Houston. I can't decide which version of Careless Whisper I prefer.

Cake has a nice cover of I Will Survive. And their version of Guitar Man is better, at least I think so.

And I think Walk Off The Earth did a better job with Someone I Used To Know.

Pomplemoose has an absolutely fantastic cover of Single Ladies.

I like Cake's cover of I Will Survive. I still prefer the original, but I will happily listen to the cover.

Regarding Careless Whisper, I've always really enjoyed Gossip's version. So different to the original! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ybZzx4xs4JU

Wow, just...wow.
First two measures I thought I could never like this (I am a huge George Micheal fan), but this is actually good.
My prime opposition with covers is that most of them have no emotion in them. The singers try to sing a technically perfect song, and don't put any emotion in the song, because they don't feel the emotion in it.
I'd much rather hear a song that is not technically perfect but with the emotion oozing out.
Sorry Sizz, I don't like the Gossip version of Careless whisper. It makes me shiver.

That makes sense, because I don't like George Michael (except for Faith, and Last Christmas) haha
