For its time, it was watchable I guess. And perhaps the appeal lied in the gore that may have been relatively uncommon in American/Hollywood theaters back in those days.
I remember watching both parts when they were each first released. First part was more interesting than the second one as it was more action-oriented and borrowed a lot of themes from Japanese films and media.
