I don't think the friend was trying to state that they're the same language. I think he was trying to give an example of the perspective of the couple.

There's no such thing as a Mexican language. Most people in Mexico speak Spanish but they also have a diversity of indigenous languages as well. If it doesn't sound the same it might be due to some dialect.

Spain's spanish is as different of Mexican's spanish as American english is different from Europpean english.
