Certain things are made illegal for our consumption by our government because it has been determined that these substances are bad for us, and have no known benefit for individuals or for the country as a whole. They tried this with alcohol in the Twenties. When they found this adventure to be a colossal failure, they switched to Marijuana. Laws are now in place in the United States that prohibit the propagation, sales, distribution, or use of any of the family, genus, and species of plants related to Cannabis. This includes Hemp, which does not contain the lovely chemicals that get people high, but looks and smells the same. Seems to me this is a waste of time and energy to enforce these laws, when a little research could help find more uses of similar fibers and naturally occurring oils without the "social impact" that they fear. Here is one example from Canada:

Re: prohibition
Alchol is just about as likely to smurf with someones grey matter if they have it often enough, along with many other parts of their body that don't get hit so hard by the evil green weed. Add on top of that the number of people who get violent when drunk, or injure themselves or others unitentionally, and all the associated health conditions that regular cigarettes can kindly offer you. It becomes fairly easy to see that altough MJ isn't as harmless as some people like to say, there are other worse things that are perfectly legal, and good for the economy and taxes, and since the NHS has to pick up the bill for alchol and smoking related treatments, along with all those related to people who use weed despite it's illegal status. They may as well be taxing that too, because the slap on the wrist that currently exists is not enough to deter anyone who wants to do it, all is does is make is less controlled and regulated.
