For the puppy you could go down at eyelevel with the dog. Or maybe even a little lower.
The tree picture lacks a bit of depth. If you would have gotten down and hava a twig or a few sprigs of grass at close to the lens (might even be blurred) it would have had more impact.

I miss my DSLR... STOOPID ex-husband... rawr taking pics with an iPhone pales in comparison.

The description I posted on dA is as follows:
It's broken, and we found it on a vacant property. Mother loved it and and wanted me to bring it home and put it in the flower bed, just for looks. I couldn't say no, since I also thought it'd look pretty!
